Flymodel Nr. 31, Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird", 1:33

    First of all, I would like to apologise for not knowing german language, but I hope, that most of you are able to read english. I just want to share my experience with fellows germans, and I hope that you will understand me :)

    Erst einmal möchte ich mich entschuldigen, dass ich kein Deutsch kann, aber ich hoffe, dass die meisten von euch Englisch lesen können. Ich möchte meine Erfahrung mit Euch teilen und hoffe, dass ihr mich versteht.


    So, after finishing Fokker DR.I from Maly Modelarz, I wanted something bigger, so I decided to make the SR-71.

    Nachdem ich die Fokker DR.I von Maly Modelarz fertig habe, wollte ich etwas größeres bauen, also habe ich mich für die SR-71 entschieden


    First of all, something about the plane. This is one of the most favourite aircrafts. It is almost 50 years old (it is operative since 1959), but it is still the fastest aircraft in the world (used in military service)!!! Its top speed is over Mach 3.2 (almost 4000 kmph).
    Note that I do not calculate experimental aircraft like X-15 (Mach 6.7) and X-43 (Mach 10).
    Other fast airplanes are Mig-25 Foxbat and XB-70 Valkyrie, but SR-71 remains the fastest aircraft in the world.

    Erst einmal etwas über das Flugzeug. Dies ist eines der berühmtesten Flugzeuge. Es ist etwas über 50 Jahre alt (im Dienst seit 1959), aber es ist immer noch das schnellste Militärflugzeug der Welt. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit ist über Mach 3.2, fast 4000km/h. Experimentalflugzeuge wie X-15 (Mach 6,7) und X-43 (Mach 10) habe ich dabei nicht berücksichtigt. Andere schnelle Flugzeuge sind die Mig-25 und XB-70, aber die SR-71 bleibt das schnellste.


    So now about model. It is from Flymodel in 1:33 scale. Width of this plane is 51cm and lenght is - 1 meter.

    Jetzt über das Modell. Es ist von Fly, im Maßstab 1:33. Die Breite ist 51cm, die Länge 1m.


    Quality of colours, schemes, paper is very good. Almost all parts are in gloss black. It looks very interesting, when the paper shines! Full two-seated cockpit and landing gear wells are included.


    Die Qualität der Farben und des Papiers ist sehr gut. Fast alle Teile sind schwarz glänzen - sieht sehr interessant aus. Detailliertes Zweisitzer-Cockpit und Fahrwerksschächte sind dabei.


    I don't know about parts fit, but it seems to be good. Well, we will see during the work process.

    Ich weiß nicht, wie die Teile passen, aber es sieht gut aus. Wir werden sehen, wie es beim Zusammenbau aussieht.

    So the work begins.


    For now, I will make only the front part of the plane. The back one will be made in the future.


    The framework must be assembled very carefully and tightly, because it is a very big model. Also I must maintain the geometry and the shape, because it is very easy to coil and spoil the model :))


    First of all, I reinforce the formers and then cut out them with x-acto blade. Then I polish all the edges of cut out formers.

    Die Arbeit beginnt. Ich werde erstmal nur den Vorderteil des Flugzeuges bauen, das hintere Ende kommt später.


    Die Spanten müssen sehr genau zusammengebaut werden, weil es ein sehr großes Modell ist. Auch muß man aufpassen, dass die Geometrie stimmt, es ist sehr leicht einen Verzug einzubauen.


    Ich habe die Spanten auflaminiert und mit einem X-Acto Messer ausgeschnitten. Alle Kanten der Spanten wurden verschliffen.

    I have injured the index finger, while cutting out the formers ;( ;( ;(

    Since, this aircraft is rather modern and has inswept fuselage with sharp edges, so I had to work out, how to make nice edges.


    I saw, that vertical formers do not reach the edge of the flat former, so I decided, that the best way is to polish, and polish, and polish.... 8)


    For that polishing, I used the small sheet of almost smooth sandpaper. So take a look at this:


    Das Flugzeug hat eine recht moderne Form mit einem eingezogenen Rumpf mit scharfen Kanten, also mußte ich einen Weg finden, diese Kanten zu bauen.


    Ich habe gesehen, dass die vertikalen Spanten nicht das Ende der flachen Spanten erreichen, also habe ich entschieden, dass der richtige Weg ist, zu schleifen und schleifen und schleifen...


    Dafür habe ich einen kleinen Bogen fast glattes Schleifpapier verwendet.

    Because this airplane back will be very heavy, so it won't stand on all wheels. Because this airplane has a nose-gear, I had to put weight in to the nose, in order to counterweight the back.

    I've prepared the place for wheels in the landing gear well area, and I've also prepared the reinforcement area for landing gear attachment. Because this model is very big, it is going to weight much, so I had to make a tough gear :D :D :D


    Ich habe den Platz für die Räder im Fahrwerksschacht vorbereitet und auch einige Verstärkungen für die Befestigung des Fahrwerks vorgesehen. Das Modell ist sehr groß, und es wird viel wiegen, deshalb muss ich ein stabiles Fahrwerk bauen.

    I have made a plenty of reinforcing formers by myself, because I want this model to be tough.
    Because it is very large, more time on making formers must be spent :] :]


    So I think, that the frontal part formers are finished. :D

    More about model:


    I found some bugs: some stripes on the fuselage are not very emphatic, and sometimes dissolves, but I think, that it is very small circumstancial. Also all cockpit and landing gear wells are absolutely white, so I scanned them, painted with Adobe Photoshop and then I printed them.



    One more thing. I am going to install electric system in to this plane of shinning LED's (Light Emitting Diode), and I want to ask all of you, does SR-71 has the wingtip lights?


    On the wing parts, I did not find any lights... Maybe, SR-71 doesn't have these lights?


    Mehr zum Modell:
    Ich habe einige Fehler gefunden: Einige Streifen am Rumpf sind nur sehr Schwach gedruckt und manchmal gar nicht vorhanden, aber ich denke, daß ist weniger schlimm. Auch der gesamte Cockpitbereich und die Fahrwerksschächte sind absolut weiss. Also habe ich sie gescannt und in Photoshop neu koloriert und ausgedruckt.


    Eins noch. Ich werde ein bisschen Elektrik in Form von Leuchtdioden in den Flieger einbauen und ich wollte euch alle fragen, ob die SR-71 Positionslichter an den Tragfllächenenden hat?
    An den Tragflächen habe ich keine Lichter gefunden, vielleicht hat die SR-71 gar keine?

    First of all a great work what you do.
    I build this Aircraft Last Year,but i found some Troubles
    Because the Sheet´s are most blak so you have no Measurment
    where you have exactly to cut.
    this means a lot of Measure and some Part´s are not Fit correctly
    Speacaly the Air intake Part are a nightmare to built.
    i tried to give the modell extra strenghtnes with a Polysterol inlay
    wich i Glued onto the Stringer´s betwen and cut the rest with a "hot wire rope" to give the Paper no Chance to "drop" betwen the Cardboard Stringer´s wich is in the most time when you have "large" sections betwen.
    So pay attention to this Section

    Zuallererst, großartige Arbeit, die du da machst.
    Ich habe dieses Flugzeug letztes Jahr gebaut und hatte einige Schwierigkeiten.Da die Bögen ahuptsaächlich schwarz sind, ist es schwierig genau zu sehen wo man schneiden muss. Da muss man viel messen und einige Teile passen nicht richtig. Inbesondere der Ansaugschacht ist ein Albtraum. Ich habe versucht, dem Modell etwas mehr Stabilität zu geben, indem ich die Zwischenräume der Stringer mit Styropor verstärkt habe. Die Überstände habe ich dann mit dem heissen Draht geschnitten, so hat das Papier keine Chance zwischen den Stringern einzufallen, insbesondere bei sehr großen Sektionen. Also achte darauf.

    Thank You very much for the advice. It is very nice to hear some advices, from those, who have made the model before.


    I have noticed, that it is extremely hard to cut out plain black parts, that don't have outer line. Also, I've cut out some parts for "skinning" and I already found some fit problems, but I hope, I will manage to do it:)

    You have the Idea to Fit some LED´s in the Aircraft.
    so that is what i know. some ANTI COLLISION Light on the Wing TIP the are not, as usual by other Aircrafts Green on the right RED on the Left side.
    There is only one RED Flashing or turning LIGHT on the TOP of Fuselage
    and one on the Bottom of the Fuselage ,if This Light is on that means
    The Aircraft is in Duty,Powerd on first by a EPU (electrik power unit) and this Turbine is also helpful to fill the air pressure tanks for starting the engine and other pressured oil or Air unit´s the EPU is for understandig just a little Version of a Aircraft Turbine.
    The landing Lights are on the Landing Gear Mounted.

    Today I began work on electronics.


    While the cockpit is not made, I could make only the lighting for pilot's instrument panel. Other lighting will be made together with cockpit.

    This is how looks the pilot's instrument panel lighting. In front of these LED's I will attach instrumental panel with transparent instrumets.


    Note that I've used the original layout for cockpit (white one). Just for experimet, to see how everything looks like.
    When I make the cockpit, I will use my painted and printed one.

    ich habe heut angefangen, an der Elektronik zu arbeiten.
    Solange das Instrumentenbrett nicht fertig ist, kann ich nur die Beleuchtung für das Instrumentenbrett des Piloten machen. Der Rest wird dann zusammen mit dem Cockpit gefertigt.


    Hier sind ein paar Bilder.


    So sieht die Instrumentenbrettbeleuchtung aus. Vor diesen Leuchtdioden wird dann das INstrumentenbrett mit transparenten INstrumenten montiert.


    Beachtet, daß ich das originale Layout in weiss für das Cockpit genommen habe. Nur um zu sehen wie es aussieht.
    Wenn ich das Cockpit baue werde ich das farbige benutzen.

    A great Idea with the LED`s i do this also by some of my Modell´s
    BUT My expirience is as follows.
    the 2 LED for your cokpit is for my experience to much because the Light Angle of the LED are very close (aproximatly 10 to 15 dergree´s)
    and so you have a strong forward Light and i think you don´t want have a Disco light in the cokpit.Try 1 and try to dimme the Light.also don´t forget to close the underside of the Panel, that you have no `wrong" Light by the Feet´s, there is only Light in the Gauges.
    Please don´t understand me wrong i don´t want to critisize you.
    but that was my experience by my Modellmistakes.

    Eine super Idee mit den LEDs. Ich habe das bei einigen Modellen auch schon gemacht. Aber meine Erfahrungen sind wie folgt:
    2 LEDs für das Cockpit sind für meinen Geschmack zuviel. Weil der Abstrahlwinkel der LEDs sehr klein ist (10-15Grad) hast du eine sehr grade ABstrahlung und du willst doch kein Discolicht im Cockpit. Versuchs mal nur mit einer und regel sie etwas herunter. Und vergiss nicht, die Unterseite des Cockpits zu schliessen, sonst hast du das Licht an den falschen Stellen ausser den Instrumenten.
    Bitte versteh das richtig, ich will dich nicht kritisieren, aber das habe ich aus meinen Baufehlern gelernt.

    it´s realy an impressive Modell (close to 1meter long)


    I saw the Blackbird in a Museum in Duxford (England) which is near
    Cambrige.there is also every Year a Great Air Show with many aircraft´s from WW2. About 200 Aircrafts are make great fly pass.and there is also hangars with Aircraft´s in Static Display also a Land Warfare Hall.
    In 6 or7 Hangars you can see the Concord,B-17, B-24, B-25,The whole Grumman Family.Jet´s and realy Rare exemplare of english Aircrafts.and many more, you can visit also in Hangars Mechanic´s live by restoratin on Aircraft´s.I was very Imprest what you see for relative less Money.
    Sory i´m slipping away from Papermodelling.

    I decided to take more time on building the cockpit. Unfortunately, the cockpit, that came with the kit was barely detailed, but I'm going to make it extremely detailed.


    First of all I began with seats. So for this update I will show you only the pilot and RSO seats (they're the same :) )


    I've thicken the seats parts on the cardboard, and then I assembled the main body of the seats.

    ich habe mich entschieden mehr Zeit in den Bau des Cockpits zu investieren. Unglücklicherweise ist das im Bausatz enthaltene Cockpit nur sehr wenig detailliert, aber ich werde es extrem detailliert bauen.


    Als erstes habe ich bei den Sitzen angefangen. Also zeige ich heute nur den Piloten- und Copilotensitz (RSO = rear seat officer). Die sind gleich.


    Die Teile des Sitzes habe ich alle verstärkt und habe dann die Hauptteile zusammengesetzt.

    Secondly, I mixed some paint to get the seat colour

    Then I've put some glue on the edges to get them rounder. I've used this technique from dear Swinger's Ju-88 seats from http://www.cardmodels.net and http://www.kartonwork.pl forums.


    Dann habe ich etwas Kleber auf die Kanten gegeben, um diese abzurunden. Ich habe diese Technik bei den JU88 Sitzen von 'Dear swinger' auf http://www.cardmodels.net und http://www.kartonwork.pl abgeschaut.

    Hello everyone,


    I would like to ask about the paint.


    What's the main difference between the enamel and acrylic paint? Which is better to use? What are good and bad things about these paints?


    I use only enamel, because they don't have any bad smell, and our local hobby shop has only enamel paint from Italeri :D

    Ich hab da mal ne Frage zum Thema Farbe.
    Was ist der Hauptunterschied zwischen Lackfarbe (Emaille) und Acrylfarbe? Welche kann man besser verwenden? Was sind die Vor- und Nachteile?
    Ich benutze bisher nur erstere, weil sie nicht riecht und mein ortsansässiger Händler Lackfarbe von Italeri führt.

    So lets continue. I have gained especially useful experience about paper model techniques during a recent paper models contest, where I won the prize :). That contest took place in our capital - Vilnius.


    So for now - side panels. I have made them to shine :)


    First of all I cut out the panels and the holes on it:

    So that's all about side panels

    Then I have glued a small card strip in order not to see the lights trough the joints between the side wall and side panel. Also I made the same procedure with the joint between the floor and side panels:


    Dann habe ich einen kleinen Streifen Karton eingeklebt, um zu verhindern, daß die Lichter durch den Spalt zwischen Instrumentenbrett und Seitenwand scheinen. Dieselbe Prozedur habe ich an der Kontakstelle von Boden und Instrumentenbrett gemacht:

    And now with the RSO instrumental panel. I have used the same technique as with the side panels. Later I have attached three diodes and closed that insrumental panel. Wires were attached from the sides.

    And now, I begin the skinning. I will come back to cocpit later, when skinning around cocpit will be finished.


    First of all, I will work with the nose of the plane. So I have polished edges a bit and then I have painted them in flat black. Also you can see, that I have attached some more former parts to the belly. I have also made some additional formers, to strenghen the construction.


    Und nun fange ich mit der Beplankung an. Da sCockpit kommt später wiedre dran, wenn die Beplankung um das Cockpit fertig ist.
    Als Erstes habe ich mit der Rumpfnase angefangen. Ich habe die Kanten etwas angeschliffen und dann Mattschwarz lackiert. Des Weiteren kann man erkennen, daß ich einige zusätzliche Spanten angebracht habe.

    So I have glued the skin parts to the watman, in order to make my model more tight and more resistant to external damage (i.e. finger pushing and other factors)


    Die Teile der Aussenhaut habe ich aufgedoppelt, um das Modell etwas resistenter gegen äußere Einflüße zu machen (Fingerdruck etc)


    Note that the skin part and watman part must be formed before glued, because if you try to form them after glueing, parts will start to break.


    Zu beachten ist, daß die Aussenhaut und das Verstärkungsteil vorgeformt werden müssen. Formt man sie erst nach dem Kleben, brechen sie.


    Also before glueing, both parts must be covered with glue, because they will be able to slide a bit, and you will have some time to correct their positions. If you cover with glue only one part, they will connect immediately, and you won't be able to correct them anymore. The parts will be ruined.


    Auch muss der Kleber vor dem Zusammensetzen auf beide Seiten aufgetragen werden, damit sich die Teile noch etwas verschieben lassen und man etwas Zeit hat die Position noch zu verändern. Trägt man den Kleber nur auf eine Seite auf, verbinden sich die Teile sofort und man kann sie nicht mehr korrigieren. Dann sind die Teile ruiniert.


    Also formers must be lessen by polishing, because skin is thicker, while using this technique.


    So when the glue dries, parts become extremely hard and tight and model becomes almost invincible :P :] ;) :)



    Desweiteren muss man die Teile etwas dünner schleifen, weil sie mit dieser Technik ja etwas dicker werden.
    Wenn der Kleber trocken ist, werden die Teile extrem hard und steif und das Modell wird unzerstörbar :P :] ;) :)

    first and formost congratulations on your thorough work with the cockpit. You
    have really worked wonders there.


    As far as acrylic paints are concerned, my experiences are overall pretty good.
    you can thin them with water (which ist healthier than having to use thinner all the time) at your pleasure and they last much longer than enamels (my Revell or Humbrol paints always dried up quickly, I was rarely able to enjoy more than 50% of them) So even considered that acrylic paints are more expensive, they are a good buy.
    The colors mix easily too.
    They have one disadvantage though: one shouldn´t use them to paint lager surfaces, the paper will change its shape.


    Usually I buy colors from citadel, a producer who offers them to paint fantasy figures with.

    Zuallererst einmal Gratulation zu deiner sehr sorgfältigen Arbeit. Du hast hier wirklich Wunder vollbracht.


    So weit es Acrylfarben angeht, meine Erfahrungen damit sind alles in allem sehr gut. Sie sind wasserverdünnbar (was auch gesünder ist als immer Verdünner nehmen zu müssen und man kann sie viel länger verwenden. Meine Revell und Humbrol Farben sind immer sehr schnell eingetrocknet und ich konnte kaum die Hälfte davon benutzen. Also auch vor dem Hintergund des höheren Preises sind Acrylfarben eine gute Alternative. Die Farben lassen sich auch sehr gut mischen. Einen Nachteil haben sie jedoch. Man sollte sie nicht auf großen Flächen einsetzen, weil sich das Papier dann wellt. Normalerweise kaufe ich Farben von Citadel, ein Produzent, der diese für Fantasy-Figuren anbietet.

    I think, that you already forgot, that I was making SR-71 :) It was just slow work with wires... It would be silly for me to put posts ant to say: "Oh, today I have soldered two wires", next day: "Oh, and today I have soldered another wire with resistor"....


    So now I have finished all these works, and I can show it to you. Offcourse, there is nothing interesting to see except the bunch of wires:)


    So the main topic of this post is the soldering of the wires.

    Ich glaube, ihr habt schon fast vergessen, daß ich an der SR-71 arbeite. Die Verkableung ging nur langsam voran. Es wäre albern Beiträge zu schriben nach dem Motto: " Oh heute habe ich zwei Drähte zusammengelötet." und am nächsten Tag: " Oh und heute habe ich einen weiteren Draht und einen Widerstand zusammengelötet"...
    So, aber jetzt wo das alles fertig ist, kann ich es euch zeigen. Natürlich gibt es nichts wirklich interessantes zu sehen, ausser vielen Drähten:)
    Also der Hauptgrund dieses Beitrags ist das Verlöten der Drähte. Hier könnt ihr die SR71 auf dem Tisch liegen sehen..

    And here you can see a pilot's instrumental panel, with transparent instruments. And under it you can see a card cover, to prevent the light from shining near the pilots legs :)

    First of all I made a small frame from wire, for each instrument.


    So firstly, I made small round parts by using a tool of appropriate diameter:

    First of all I would like to thank all of you for beautiful words and support.


    So..


    I don't like my work at all! :( :(


    I think, that morning is smarter than evening :)
    So today I have fixed the majority of problems and I have also added nail varnish, to make instrument glasses. I have used mother's clear nail varnish :) I hope she won't be upset on me...


    So the benefit I get from such forums, is that I want to make my models better and better, when I see the works of the masters.



    So I had to remove the panel from the plane.. and then I modified it. Everything can be seen in the photos.


    As I made all photos in macro mode, so all circumstances are clearly seen. As in live, you won't see any of these bugs :) Also it is very hard to make everyhing neatly, because the diameter of small rings are less than 1mm..

    zuerst einmal vielen Dank an euch alle für die netten Worte und eure Unterstützung.
    Also..
    Mir gefällt meine Arbeit so gar nicht.
    Ich glaube man ist morgens klüger als abends. Heut habe ich die größten Probleme gelöst und ich habe auch Nagellack hinzugefügt, als Instrumentenverglasung. Ich habe den klaren Nagellack meiner Mutter benutzt, hoffentlich ist sie nicht sauer auf mich..
    Der Vorteil eines solchen Forums ist, daß man selber immer besser werden möchte, wenn man sich mit den Meistern vergleicht.
    Ich musste das Instrumentenbrett nochmal vom Flugzeug trennen und habe es dann modifiziert. Kann man alles auf den Photos sehen. Ich habe alle Photos im Makro-Modus geschossen, damit man alles erkennen kann. In Wirklichkeit sieht man keinen dieser Fehler.
